ABOUT CANTERBURY
The ancient city of Canterbury is one of the most historic centres in Europe and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cathedral is famous throughout the world as in 1170 Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered there. Since that time the cathedral has attracted thousands of pilgrims, as told in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The cathedral remains the heart of the Anglican church.
Canterbury also has museums, churches, parks, a river and a visitor attraction that lets you see what life was like in the days of Chaucer.
Canterbury has good public transport links to the nearby countryside and sea as well as to other towns and cities.
The city is a centre of learning. It is a university town with two universities: the University of Kent and Christ Church College.
There is a big foreign language community which makes it a lively and cosmopolitan city.
Culturally, Canterbury has the Marlowe Theatre, which shows a variety of plays and musical entertainment.
There is also a theatre at the university often showing independent films. Look out for concerts at the cathedral and the annual Canterbury Arts Festival held every autumn.
There are many restaurants and cafes in the city as well as traditional pubs often serving food.
Canterbury has become one of the major shopping towns in Kent with many famous British stores having branches there. There are small independent shops as well as an outdoor market. All these are within a few minutes’ walk from the school.
For those interested in sport, the swimming pool and sports centre is just a short distance from the school. It is also possible to play golf and cycle in the nearby countryside.
